Napoleon has crushed the Austrians and the Russians in 1805, the Prussians in 1806 and the Russians again in 1807.

Only Britain  defies him, protected by the Channel and the mighty Royal Navy.

The only way to harm "Pefidious Albion" is economic: by Continental blocus, to close all european markets to british world wide merchandises.

But Britain has a tiny ally: Bragance Royal family of Portugal, which doesn t respect the blocus.

Napoleon can t tolerate such an exception to his rules, but to go to Portugal he needs to cross Spain, his ally.

Spain, her ancient magnificent Glory fading away. losing grasps on her New World colonies.
Corrupt aristocraty, bankrupt royal treasure, weak and divided Royal family.

The country is mountainous, broken with numerous sierras with poor communications,
its rural people often lives in indignous poverty, under the rule of landlords.

The ideas of the French Revolution can t florish on such a land ...

The Monarchy tried to bring some reforms the country needs so much , but the fear of the french révolution was to high.

The division of the Royal family between Carlos IV and his son Ferdinand VII offers Napoleon the opportunity to impose the Fontainebleau Treaty which grants him the crossing of Spain territory with his armies.

100 000 french troops are send in Spain, seizing key cities and invading Portugal, the Bragance flees to her colony of Brasil with a british avy  squadron escort.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Napole11

Napoleon, opportunistic and machiavelic, forces Ferdinand VII to abdicate and  instead of using him as a puppet he scheme to put his own brother , Joseph Bonaparte, on the throne,
in april 1808 at Bayonne, in a diplomatic trap.

A new front is open...
Spain and Portugal will be soon part of the Empire...

TURN 1 Fall/Winter 1808

"...and war to the knife was declared upon the French.”
-Christopher Summerville

"But it was easy to perceive how astonished they were
[the Spaniards] at the sight of our young infantry soldiers.
The moral effect was wholly to our disadvantage,
and as I compared the broad chests and powerful limbs
of the Spaniards who surrounded us with those
of our weak and weedy privates,
my national pride was humbled."
- French officer, Baron de Marbot

The Dos de Mayo popular uprising against french occupation of Madrid has many conséquences in whole of Spain.
The Monarchy power usurpated By Napoléon, Juntas in the différent régions organise the résistance.
The spanish troops eager to fight the invadors are lurking for easy preys.

The french small corps of Junot and Delaborde, in Lisbon, of Dupont in Cordoba are isolated deep in enemy territory.

The Séville Junta strikes soon, sending Castanos, Reding Galluzo and Infantado divisions to surround Dupont conscript young troops.
The battle near Cordoba is the first french defeat and surrender of a french napoléonic corps in Europe.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2926

Dupont surrenders to Castanos , the men are sent to British pontoons, all Europe is astonished to see a "french army" defeated.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) La_ren10

A small british  expeditionary corps lands in Mondego Bay (North of Lisbon), Some Portuguese troops join it
and the anglo allied formation move to bring battle to Junot.
Cornered by the sea and the Tajo estuary, Junot and Delaborde must stay and fight.

It s a phyrric french small Victory, the losses are heavy, Junot small corps is shattered.

TURN 2 Spring/Summer 1809

"If you want a thing done well...do it yourself !"
Napoleon

The Emperor Strikes back, cross the pyrénées South of Bayonne with his imperial guard and and two other corps, then go west to Santander.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2931

Then he move with speed to Astorga.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2932

His aim is to seize Ciudad Rodrigo fortress then rush to Lisbon to consolidate the french expeditionary corps.

But he dosen t know that Moore landed in Mondego bay with two british divisions.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2933

In Lisbon, the french remnants, beleaguered , ignorant of Napoleon projects, accept the Cintra Convention.
They are shiped to France by the Royal Navy...they will not suffer  the hellish British pontoons .

Portugal is freed from French invadors.
Britain win a political Victory,
portuguese alliance is stronger than ever.

But bad news from central Europe reach Napoleon:

Austria invades Bavaria, a french protectorate, declaring  war to the Empire.
Napoleon must return in France with his imperial guard and another corps.

The french drive towards Portugal is stopped  dead in its tracks...

But Ciudad Rodrigo walls are breached, the fortress, without any garrison surrenders.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Murall10

The juntas recruits troops everywhere

Soult breach the Tarragona walls forcing Vives division to accept Honors of War to escape permanent destruction.
The fortress falls.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2936

With Ciudad Rodrigo they are  the lone successes of the french arms...

Napoleon is gone to war with Austria...
The ibérian Peninsula is becoming an ulcer...

TURN 3  Fall/Winter 1809

« Victory belongs to the more persevering »
Napoléon

In two months Napoléon campaigns victoriously against Archiduke Charles, culminating in a big battle.
The courageous austrians were defeated by the master of  the battles.
AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Dought10

The Treaty of Shönbrunn ends the 5th Coalition, Austria is out for a long time...Britain stands alone with her weak allies, Spain and Portugal.

Napoléon move with great speed to Bayonne to carry on his plan :
get the British out of Portugal and garrison it with forces to prevent their coming back
If they are foolish enough to accept battle...so much the better, he will crush them with his superb cavalry and his Guard.

They are the more dangerous, the spaniards are only rabble.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2952

He gathers some corps and cross the frontier and moves to Santander.
Garrisoning the key cities to control the région, AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2953

then he goes to Valladolid before coming back to Ciudad Rodrigo he left 3 months ago.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2954

But bad news strike again :
a powerful spanish army lead by this damned Castanos is threatening Madrid.
AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2955

The letter from his brother Joseph says that Savary big division was cornered against the Tajo near Ocana

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2957

and obliged to stand and fight, it was completely shattered with many losses, the spaniards too but they were more numerous and Castanos won his 2nd battle, after Cordoba.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2956

Napoleon can t risk losing Madrid, it would be a major political blow which would enhance the rebellion.
He separate his force in two parts, one with Masséna with Mc Donald division and the cavalry of  Milhaud will move to Madrid,

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2958

the second will go with him to Ciudad Rodrigo.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2959

The « rabble » forced him to change his plans and to divide his forces, against his own rules of stratégy.
Moorewho was moving to take Ciudad Rodrigo is impressed by the arrival of Napoleon and prefers retreat to Lisbon, winter will slow the Emperor Pursuit.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2960

In Catalonia, Soult continue to subdue the région, he moves with two divisions to Tortosa and lay siege to the fortress.
It has just a token garrison, it should fall quickly.

But the walls are not breached !
Worse...his troops get some losses (1 step).

He tries again one month later but happens the same fateful failure, he gets one more step loss and the walls are intact.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2961

Soult could have utilized more engineers and munitions but he thought it was unnecessary.

This big mistake is another bad news for the Emperor,

Before coming back in Spain he had not many confindence in the proud and arrogant Marshal and send Suchet to Perpignan with two divisions to take command of all forces of Catalonia.

Castanos,  cautious, retreat to Andalousia

One year and a half of dirty warfare ...and the end of it is unknown.

Why is it so much more complicated than Austrian front ?

TURN 4   Spring/Summer 1810

« A leader is a dealer in hope »
Napoléon »

Napoléon needs reinforcements to invade Portugal.
3 French divisions are moving by extended march from Bayonne to Salamanca.
The stragglers are replaced by men who are gathered  from all Leon région.
Bessières infantry big division and Montbrun dragoons cavalry corps join Napoléon in Ciudad Rodrigo.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2963

Impatient to fight the british before they could reinforce themselves , Napoleon decides to go without waiting for more.
With 7 units he has enough troops ...he thinks.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2964

Masséna was craving for reinforcement but Portugal invasion has top priority over Andalousia.
Isolated on southern new Castile in Ciudad Real, the french  Marshall doesn t want to give up and return to Madrid.
He sent many courriers to King Joseph to summons troops, but the King is a puppet, he has no soldiers apart his poor quality guard, and reigns on Capital city only.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2966

Suchet moves to Gerona and lay siege.
He spend one command point to direct the engineers and siege artillery batteries.
The +1 he gets is hust enough to breach the walls (D6=1  FR Step loss !, +1 french, +1 Command point, total 3 against fortress 2)
Gerona is taken …

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2967

Soult enrages and spend a command point to siege Tarragona, the city is breached and fell.
AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2968

Napoleon order Two divisions just arrived from Bayonne to take Ameida.
The siege of the fortress.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2965

4 units are recalled from Moore army.
The lines of Torres Vedras are not ready, too much work and not enough portuguese peasants
to buid it.

Moore needs time...

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) 81a5fe11

The Lisboete high sociéty is commenting with anxiety the rumors of Napoléon « the Ogre »
invasion with his « Grande Armée ».
The portuguese people prepares for the storm which is coming, the peasants hide their supplies, evacuate sometimes from exposed main avenues.
Everybody is holding breath...

In London, the Whigs advocates an evacuation of Portugal to save the army,
the tories in their obsessional  hate of France ,  Revolution ideas and Emperor,
carry the day...Moore will be ordered to stay and fight...to the death if needed.

In Spain, the juntas gather strength, build divisions, feed guérillas, Zaragoza, Valencia, are garrisoned in force,  Andalousia army is reinforced.

TURN 5  Fall/Winter 1810

“Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,
As his corse to the rampart we hurried;
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot
O'er the grave where our hero we buried.
(.....)
Slowly and sadly we laid him down,
From the field of his fame fresh and gory;
We carved not a line, and we raised not a stone,
But we left him alone with his glory.”
Poet Charles Wolf

In September, with the Portuguese fortress of Almeida in his control,  Napoleon unleash the dogs of war against Portugal.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Napole14

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2970

Moore concentrates all his forces (6 units) near Torres Vedras where the fortifications  secretly projected aren t erected.

Napoleon concentrates his 7 units near the city of Coimbra

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2972

Then moves his forces in a two pronged movement to battle the Anglo Portuguese Army.

Moore prefers to fight here rather than retreat to Lisbon, he positions his army defensively  on the rolling hill country.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2974

Montbrun charges with his dragoons,

The French assault with division columns

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) French11

The thin british red line and the blue Portuguese line fire
AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Igp15310

Napoleon must play 3 command points to enhance the assault (change the D6 which were bad lucked)
Moore has more luck and plays only one.

The french lose 9 steps, the anglo portuguese only 3.

Napoleon throw his Guard in the fray to snatch Victory from the jaws of defeat,

His vétérans from so many battlefields inflict two more losses on these damn british redcoats ...

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) 13616111

But For Napoleon It s a failure...

He can't risk more losses so deep in hostile country, his line of communications are in jeopardy, two spanish divisions are besieging Almeida and Ciudad Rodrigo,
he cut his losses and call off the Attack.
The retreat is ordered.

Moore, vengeful, use a command point to send the Carufurd Light division on pursuit,

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) 95_th_10

One more step loss is inflicted on retreating french infantry ,
the battle is a Victory, 10 losses to only 5.
But Moore is wounded by some artillery fire.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) 36_21410

Like Nelson at Trafalgar naval battle, he dies on the evening.

The anglo allied army will stay on the battlefield, The french army will evade at ease with speed towards the forteresses of Alemida and Ciudad Rodrigo.

During the time of the invasion of Portugal, Spanish Juntas were not inactive:
In the North west, Cuesta and Blake moved behind the great invasions, columns thrusting deep in Portugal, to lay siege to the Portuguese fortress of Almeida and the Spanish one of Spain.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2978

In Leon, the guérilla band of marquista infested the rear areas of the lines of communication with North of Spain.
In New Castille,  Juan Martin Diaz "el empecinado" roamed the rugged sierras and desolate plains of central Spain in search of convoys to loot and  french détachments to massacre.
In Navarre , Francisco Espoz y Mina reigned on the montainous passes.

They were patriots, ancient soldiers defeated, monks, brigands and bandits, religious fanatics, praising God and King, abominating the invadors and révolutionnary ideas alike.
For the Catholic Church it was a new crusade.

One region was deeply contaminated in 1809, three in 1810, the war by terror was growing,
Goya painted the horrors which paved these days:

There is no front, the Empire only control the land its soldiers are walking on...
he must garrison every key point and abandon everything else to the marauding bands.

In the East, Soult took the fortress of Tortosa, then conducted the army to lay siege on Zaragoza.
Suchet wanted to go for Valencia, the rich region of Levant, but Soult prevailed, it was necessary to connect Catalonia to the central and western régions of Spain.

Soult used a command point to enhance the siege operations:
the walls were breached ... the 4 french divisions rushed in  the city and were soon fighting a vicious house to house combat with no mercy, a duel of brutal savagery against garrison, fanatic monks and enraged population.

in the end, after many weeks of hell, the french prevailed, destroying their opponents, but Soult divisions lost 6 steps (more in proportion than the divisions of Napoleon in Portugal).

Napoleon ignored these bad news, all communications with Spain were cut by the portuguese roving bands and by the siege of the two frontier fortresses by Cuesta and Blake.

the french army retreated with speed in three columns among the rugged Portuguese mountains.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) French12

Napoleon sent two of them to relieve the fortresses.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_2984

Cuesta and Blake outnumbered divisions were utterly smashed by the french columns wanting to revenge from their recent defeat in Portugal.

Napoleon was in the same position he was in 1809: camped near the Portugal Frontier in Ciudad Rodrigo.

He had been personally defeated in battle for the first time...
All Europe would know that...
All  would know he was n t invincible, particularly in Spain.

He had to find a new strategy... a winning strategy.

What gone wrong ?

First, he had to fight at the end of an very long line of communications
with no reserves at hand to reinforce him or cover his communications.

Two, he engaged in a one on one odds Attack, against a powerful defensive foe concentrated at the end of a narrow countryside between a huge river and the sea preventing outflanking movement

Three, he had bad luck.

But...the spaniards are no match for him in battle, and their fearceful resistance in city fighting are losing anyway against his legions.

So...he had to Hammer them resentfully, take Valencia and Andalousia, and wait the british
when they will go out of their Portuguese stronghold.
They will have to Attack him...not so easy as Torres Vedras.

"Take time to deliberate ,
but when the time for action has arrived,
stop thinking and go in "
Napoleon

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Napoleon mobilises the ressources of his great army, his german and polish allies send him many troops.
More and more divisions cross the Pyrénées Mountains to feed the God of war...
Four go to the west by Santander then to Leon towards Galicia.
Three more and the Milhaud cavalry corps cross the Sierra de Guadarrama,
near Madrid.
Their objective ? Andalousia.

Soult leaves Zaragoza with his two battered divisions, ( Suchet send him his lone division and come back north to France).

The ambitious Marshall wants to be the first to enter Valencia, and submit this garden of Eden for his own kingdom.

Napoleon wants these three wealthy régions, and leave the desert ones to the spaniards and their damned british allies.

Valencia is besieged.

In the north west, the four small divisions are in front of  the Cantabrica Sierra, ready to invade Galicia or Asturias.

The allies reinforce Portugal with 5 more divisions, the Torres Vedras lines are ready and manned by thousands portuguese militias, turning Portugal in a huge fortress.

Wellington is now in command !
He becomes Generalissimo and gives orders to all partidas, guérillas bands, juntas divisions.
He doesn t want to take risks, his Government would lower the British commitment if it s lone army would be defeated.

Wellington s plan is to let Napoleon overextend himself...
But Napoleon is camped in Ciudad Rodrigo with his Guard, in a central position, waiting for a Duke s mistake.

The Spanish obey his orders, the splendid Victory of British arms against Napoleon in Torres Vedras has overcome their natural defiance against Britain.
They reinforce with new troops every region threatened.

The spanish army can t evade battle,

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3023

It s the first big battle opposing the two ennemies.
The french are 13 against 19 (pips) but are B quality and have a A cavalry corps,
the spanish are C quality with just one B quality unit.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3024

The spanish take 6 steps losses, the french only 3,
Castanos orders the retreat, Masséna spend a command point to pursue him with his cavalry which inflicts one more step loss.

The battered spanish army disperse to take reguge in the spanish coastal fortresses of Cadiz and Tarifa.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3025

One division stays in Sévilla, Masséna moves with the cavalry and two divisions, leaving two ones in Cordoba, and impose a skirmish.

In the NorthWest the spanish flags are tattered

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3027

La Romana "elite" spanish  division is defending Lugo against three french divisions.
he is defeated, his command smashed, the french have not any loss, it s a brilliant skirmish french Victory.

Corunna is the next to fall to the Empire forces.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3028

Galicia is conquered...

With the Andalousian fortresses, Estremadura and Murcia are free, but they are the poorer régions of Spain.

In Catalonia, Sanchez guérilla band moves from the wooded hills to besiege Tarragona
garrisoned by a mere hundred french conscripts.

But the fortress guns reply and inflict a step loss to the irregular "partida".

Suchet moves with two divisions from Barcelona.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3029
The guérillas strike and flee but Suchet used a command point to pursue with an infantry division: the Sanchez partida takes another loss...it is destroyed.

1810 is ending with french victories everywhere

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Napole18

The Master of Europe is triumphant.

His plan is successful, he is about to Knock down the spanish.

The British are next on his list...

TURN 8 Spring/Summer 1812

"The torments of précautions often exceeds the dangers to be avoided.
It's sometimes better to abandon one 's self to destiny."

Napoléon

A ministerian and a Financial crisis lowers the british commitment.
Bad harvest due to extreme weather made supply even more difficult.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3030

Then bad news came from central Europe:  Tsar Alexander refuses the continental blocus against Britain, Napoleon must accept to lose his authority or choose war against Russia.

He chooses war...
and come back home with his Guard and two divisions to prepare the eastern campaign.

The Marshalls are abandoned to their bickerings.

Wellington seizes the opportunity to move two divisions to besiege Almeida and concentrates his army to prepare an offensive in Spain.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3032

Only two french divisions garrison Ciudad Rodrigo with the small elite fortress garrison of Habert.

Almeida walls are breached and the city, undergarrisoned falls immediatly.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3033

Then come the host of  british portuguese army.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3110

The french Garrison sends courriers for help, but french forces are dispersed controling spanish régions and can't move to the rescue.

When Napoleon sends orders to reinforce Ciudad Rodrigo, it s too late...

Wellington enters Spain in force and besiege Ciudad Rodrigo.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3111

After days of bombardment a breach opens the walls.

The french Garrison refuses the honors of war and chooses to fight
The assault is brutal.

The french garrison 9 steps and is permanently destroyed.

Ciudad Rodrigo, the door to Spain, falls !

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3115

Masséna is immediatly recalled from Andalousia, by a Frightened King Joseph, to cover Madrid.

The andalousian s dream was a mirage, a pure illusion...
the coastal fortresses are saved.

Without Napoleon, everything seems to go wrong...

Mean time, Soult, selfish as ever, as a viceroy,  pursues his own little war in Murcia to enhance his little kingdom of Valencia.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3034

Cuesta and Galluzo divisions stand proudly against the "antechrist" invadors.
The Church seeing it s  wealthy power endangered, make the people seeing the french as the four horses of Apocalypse.

The battle is another french Victory but the spanish divisions are not destroyed.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Mqdefa10

Soult uses two command points to pursue with two units.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Charge10

Cuesta and Galluzzo lose 4 steps but retreat in the rugged lands of South East spain .

Soult is in possession of a desert, completely isolated, when the french armies up north are threatened by a formidable foe.

Wellington press on the beleaguered french corps.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3117

Suchet, come to take command of Leon and Old Castille french forces.
He organises a progressive retreat east out of reach of those damned british.

Wellington s supply become suddenly difficult to maintain, the lines of communications with Lisbon are stretched.
He prefers to disperse to maintain his troops in being.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3118

Overly cautious some will say, but Britain has only one army and french forces are still numerous in northern spain.

Masséna enters Madrid, The King Joseph, Napoleon s older brother can breath again.

TURN 9 Fall/Winter 1812

"All the business of war, and indeed all the business of life, is to endeavor to find out what you don't know by what you do; that's what I called 'guessing what was at the other side of the hill.'"

Wellington

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3119

King Joseph was a terrible warrior but a good man, he made reforms to suppress the inquisition, many insane taxes and blown a Wind of liberty in the limited "kingdom" around Madrid.
He had the favors of many spaniards and his partisans were called the Afrancesados (the frenchy spaniards).

But his influence disappears quickly in the wilderness surrounding the capital.

Wellington wants to fight the french piecemeal.
He mounts an offensive to surround Leon city where  the divisions of Loison et Sebastiani are foraging the countryside.

The fortress of Astorga is screened by a Portuguese division, the cavalry of Cotton block the west and Craufurd divisions the East; meantime the spaniards of La Romana cross  the northern passes of the sierra de Alba to Move to Leon, Wellington moves by the South with 2 divisions.

2nd round

The other groups which entered the battlefield where placed in reserve during the 1st Round and didn t fire, they are activated now

the french inflicts two losses to the spanish, the allies destroy the french divisions.

Wellington has swepted the north of Leon region from french presence.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3128

Will he go east to keep the initiative ?
Or, cautiously as ever, will he stop and wait reinforcements ?

"The hardest thing of all for a soldier is to retreat."

Wellington

The  guérillas says that the french are in disarray, bickerings between Masséna and Suchet for
commanding the main army disorganise them.
The complete destruction of two beautiful divisions brings doubt, there are not any  news from the "Grande armée" gone in Russia with the Emperor.

Wellington seize the opportunity to strike them in old Castille before they recover.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3130

3 spanish and 3 british  divisions move to lay siege to Burgos fortress garrisoned by two understrengh divisions and  Cassan elite engineers detachment .
They were waiting replacements but the Allied movement prevented them to come, the fortress is besieged.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3131

The british engineers and the siege artillery haven t any time left to breach the walls...
when the Duke receive the astonishing news

They are coming !

Massena is  thirty miles east with 6 divisions and the cavalry corps of Montbrun and Milhaud.

Wellington needs replacements for his somewhat depleted divisions, he can t fight now.

He retreats west to Leon region,

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3133

closely followed by the tenacious Marshall and his vengeful army.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3134

Moving swiftly, Massena catch two british divisions by a two pronged offensive, one by two divisions and the second one by three divisions  and two cavalry corps.
In his path, Sanchez guérilla band is mauled by Milhaud chasseurs à cheval, and must retreat with great losses, clearing the way for Massena troops.

Spencer Guards  and Hope divisions retreat to evade the french onslaught,
Montbrun dragoons pursue automatically,

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Aaaa11

but Massena uses two command points to enable Ney and Macdonald divisions to joins the pursuit.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Bbbbbb10

The british lose three steps during the pursuit. but survive and join Wellington main army near besieged Astorga french fortress .

It s a small french Victory but it s the first french Victory against Wellington in Spain.
The french army morale is high again.

The Wellington  offensive movement on Burgos ends in  a failure...

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3138

Winter bad weather makes supplying very difficult, the french could have easy access to the Duke line of communication with Lisbon.

A general retreat towards the portuguese frontier is necessary.

Wellington can escape without being intercepted, Massena command is blown because of the hasty pursuit days from the eastern parts of old Catille.

AAR Wellington s war from Hans Von Stockhausen (English version) Sam_3139

The french Milhaud cavalry and the gendarmes à cheval (a police counter guerilla unit) chase  relentlessly  Sanchez guérilla band and destroy it  near the northern sierras .

The french can supply with less difficulties without the threat of guérillas.

1812 ends with the french still firmly anchored in Spain.
