148 PAGES:
REVIEWS: Lost Battles, Case Yellow, Sekigahara, Death Ride, The Hardest Days, Famous Division: GD, Raphia, StrafExpedition, Sun of York, Space Infantry, Bradley's DDAY, La Bataille de la Moscowa, FAB: Sicily...
ANALYSE: Axis Empire (Totaler Krieg + Dai Senso) - La bataille d'Ascalon ( comparatif Infidel, Afde, The Croisades)
PANORAMA: The American Revolution Series (GMT)
TACTICAL AIR WARFARE, part1 Ace OF Aces
LIVRE: Simulating War ( de P. Sabin)
MOST WANTED: Ennemy Action: Ardennes (J.Butterfield), Redvers Reverse (Geoff Noble), Balance of Powers (John Gorkowski)...
HISTO: Wagram 1809 - "At the peak of their powers? Napoleon and the French Army at Wagram" (D.Hughes)
ET AUSSI: Wargames & graphisme (M. Foster), Space Ratio (P.Sabin), Salad Days at Spi (L. Glynn), The Last Page (C. Vasey) etc.

- I just completed the mock-up for the last few pages of the magazine, the white rabbit is hopping around me at top speed, and I’m hurrying to complete this last text before sending it to Eric for translation. As with every issue, I feel that this one is better than the one that came before it, that Battles is progressing, that its articles are sharper, better, and more exacting. Follow, for example, the speculations of a Charles Vasey on design concepts. Appreciate the precision and the conciseness of a John Burtt and the gonzo style of a Winslow. Let yourself be taken away by the verve of a Hughes or a Simon – in short, thanks to guys like these and all of those that I haven’t named, Battles is looking more and more like the magazine I wanted to read before I started this adventure. Thanks (a lot) to them.
But enough of the self-congratulation. Let us move to a more interesting topic: ME. I have always worked freelance, primarily as a graphic designer but not only. This means that I have almost never had a stable job with regular hours, a defined schedule stretching beyond the next three months, and that I work alone most of the time. And I like it fine. Battles Magazine is one of four jobs that I’m occupied with at the moment. It’s great being the publisher of Battles. Gratifying and passionate, really. Being a publisher is a passionate activity, after all. Many years ago I published a music magazine, before that a Comics fanzine, and it is really, I believe, the professional activity that I enjoy the most. Battles is going well (thanks to you), you like it, it makes a bit of money to help pay the taxes and add a little butter to the spinach at home. It’s cool. I’m feeling lucky. Little by little, each issue sells better than the last (note: Battles #7 is on track to be our best seller so far, surprising for an issue that includes a game on the Sino-Japanese War). And so everything is good under the sun. But Battles is not at the top of my priority list . Choices need to be made every day, real life has its demands, financially in particular. I would like this to change, maybe. That Battles would become my principal activity. That would allow me to publish every three months, as I had originally hoped, for example. To get underway some special issues that I have long thought about (in book form, but I will speak of that later). To better organize the logistics, communication, promotion, etc. In other words, to make this professional activity more professional. Maybe. It wouldn’t take much to make the difference – something like 300 new regular readers. It should be enough to allow me to drop some of my other activities and focus on Battles. However, I’m not much keen on turning myself into an aggressive salesman, to swamp the forums, to intervene whenever possible and take advantage of every opportunity to mention my magazine. Others do it for their publications, with more or les subtlety, and as a user of the target forums it exhausts me. I know some people say it’s part of the job, but I don’t like the idea of becoming a caricature of a car salesman. And as I am alone in this boat, I don’t have time for commercial gesticulations, anyway. Moreover, I supect it would not work with you. Battles has gotten known primarily by word-of-mouth – it is its quality and the quality of its contributors that make for the best advertisement. I would like it to continue like this. So, maybe you could give me a little hand. If you like this magazine and want to help, talk about Battles to those around you, on your blogs or your sites, on the forums, grade and comment on our games at BGG when you play them, for example. Understand me, I don’t ask for lobbying or some fanboys happening, but when you have the opporyunity to give the magazine a little more visibility, it would be cool if, sometimes, you don’t miss it. Thanks.
The next issue is almost already fully booked. Reviews of Festung Budapest, Godkings, Storm over Pearl Harbor, the four TPS games, an analysis of the GTS and BAR series, etc. Battles #9 should be on-schedule and should not be so long awaited, as this issue was. Crossing fingers... Until next time, good reading, good Wagram, and merci à tous.
